Can I Put New Lenses in My Old Frame? A Nigeria Guide
By McDaves Optical · Updated
Quick answer
Yes. Most frames in good condition can take new prescription lenses, so you can keep a frame you like and only pay for lenses. At McDaves you courier the frame to us from anywhere in Nigeria or drop it off in Lagos Island, we quote on WhatsApp before you pay, and our partner optician fits the lenses.
When your frame can take new lenses
Lens replacement (also called reglazing) works for most full-rim, semi-rimless and rimless frames. The new lenses are cut to the exact shape of your frame, so the frame itself needs to be in good shape.
- Hinges and screws work and the arms are not cracked.
- The rims are not bent, split or badly stretched.
- Rimless frames still have their mounting holes and screws.
- Very old or brittle plastic frames may not survive fitting, so send us a photo of yours on WhatsApp first.
What you need
Your frame and a current prescription. If your prescription is old or your vision has changed, get an eye test from an optometrist first, then send us a photo of the new prescription.
How lens replacement works at McDaves
We work with customers in Lagos and across Nigeria, including Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Benin City and Enugu.
- Send your frame by courier from anywhere in Nigeria, or drop it off at our Lagos Island shop.
- Send a photo of your prescription on WhatsApp and tell us which lens you want. We quote before you pay.
- Our partner optician measures, edges and fits the new lenses into your frame.
- Your glasses come back by courier, or you collect them from the shop. You pay the courier both ways.
What affects the cost
Replacing lenses usually costs less than a new pair, because you keep your frame. The price depends on:
- Lens type: clear, anti-glare, blue cut, photochromic or polyblue.
- Lens design: single vision, bifocal or progressive.
- How strong your prescription is. Strong prescriptions may need thinner, high-index lenses.
- Courier costs to and from us, if you are not in Lagos.

Common questions
- How much does lens replacement cost in Nigeria?
- It depends on your prescription and the lens you choose. Send us a photo of your prescription on WhatsApp and we will quote before you pay.
- How long does lens replacement take?
- Usually 2–5 business days after we receive your frame, plus courier time if you send it from outside Lagos.
- Can you put my old lenses into a new frame?
- Usually not. Lenses are cut to the shape of the frame they were made for, so a new frame needs new lenses.
