Progressive vs Bifocal Lenses: Which Should You Choose?
By McDaves Optical · Updated
Quick answer
Both let you see far and read with one pair of glasses. Bifocals have two separate zones and usually cost less; progressives change smoothly from distance to computer to reading with no visible line, but take a week or two to get used to.
Bifocal lenses
A bifocal has your distance prescription on top and a reading area at the bottom. We fit three kinds:
- D-top (flat-top): a wide, D-shaped reading area with a visible edge.
- Fused round-top: a round reading area blended into the lens.
- Invisible bifocal: two zones with no visible line.
Progressive lenses
A progressive (multifocal) lens changes power gradually from distance at the top, through computer distance, to reading at the bottom. There is no line, so it looks like a normal lens.
We fit Varilux progressives, and Varilux Transitions progressives that also darken in sunlight.
How they compare
- Look: progressives and invisible bifocals have no visible line; D-top and round-top bifocals do.
- Middle distance: progressives give you a computer zone; bifocals jump from far to near.
- Getting used to them: bifocals feel familiar quickly; progressives can take one to two weeks.
- Cost: bifocals generally cost less than progressives.
- Frame: progressives need a frame with enough lens height for all three zones.
Who each one suits
Most people start needing reading help in their 40s. Choose a bifocal if you mainly switch between far and close reading and want to keep the cost down. Choose a progressive if you use a computer a lot or want glasses that look like single-vision lenses.
Progressives depend on accurate measurements of where your eyes sit in the frame. Our partner optician takes these when fitting.
