Photochromic vs Polyblue Lenses: Grey or Blue?
By McDaves Optical · Updated
Quick answer
Both are light-adaptive lenses: clear indoors and darker outside in sunlight. Photochromic lenses turn grey, like sunglasses; polyblue lenses turn blue, for a coloured look. Pick photochromic for a classic look and polyblue if you like the blue tint.
How photochromic lenses work
Photochromic lenses (often called transition lenses) react to sunlight. They are clear indoors, darken to grey within a few minutes outside, and clear again when you go back in. Clearing usually takes a little longer than darkening.
Most photochromic lenses darken less inside a car, because the windscreen blocks much of the light that makes them react. If you drive a lot in bright sun, you may still want separate sunglasses for driving.
How polyblue lenses are different
Polyblue lenses behave the same way, clear indoors and darker outside, but the tint is blue instead of grey. They are a style choice: same convenience, different colour.
Polyblue is not the same as blue cut. Blue cut lenses stay clear and filter some screen light; polyblue lenses change colour in sunlight.
Which should you choose?
- Photochromic (grey): a classic sunglasses look that goes with any outfit.
- Polyblue (blue): a coloured, fashion look outdoors.
- Need reading help too? Photochromic also comes in progressive lenses (Varilux Transitions).
Before you buy light-adaptive glasses
Very cheap "photochromic" glasses are sold widely online in Nigeria. Before you pay anywhere, ask to see the lenses darken in sunlight, and buy from a seller that tells you clearly what happens if they don’t.
At McDaves the lenses are fitted by our partner optician to your prescription and covered by our 30-day guarantee.
